“There is freedom waiting for you,
On the breezes of the sky,
And you ask “What if I fall?”
Oh but my darling,
What if you fly?”
― Erin Hanson
This quote does something to me. It does a thing where my heart quivers and my eyes water because finally, I have beautiful words that describe a fear I’ve held onto my entire life.
Time and time again, I’ve endured enormous amounts of self-doubt that repeat at every moment I dare to reach for a star. That fear– that worry, that something bad will happen overshadows all feeling of happiness that I have. It is a vicious cycle that I’ve only been aware of recently and will most likely be a lifelong battle to deal with.
I’m always afraid of “the fall” and in losing myself down that negativity spiral, I lose the sense of what if I don’t fall? What if I fly? I’ve only just started to change my way of thinking. Maybe you who is reading this, has this same fear and self-doubt as I do. I hope this quote can help you as it’s helping me. I hope it gives you hope, because it’s certainly done that for me.
No more thinking about the falling, the dark hopelessness that comes with failure and disappointment. Instead, I want to focus on the sun that will shine on my face as I soar high above the clouds and do what I thought couldn’t be done. I want to fly.
Let’s go on with life thinking about what we are capable of. Let’s think about the flight.
This post was inspired by the short poem written by the amazingly talented writer Erin Hanson. She’s 20 years old and so talented, here is her website if you wish to indulge yourself in more of her writings: thepoeticunderground.com
Thanks for reading!
I have a fair bit of idea of holding on to fear and worry from experience, but ever since I started praying about it and focusing on positive thinking it only got better.

I hope I can get to that point, maybe soon! Praying really does help in changing that negative train of thought.

This is so true… I am starting to feel spring breaking through here in Wisconsin and it’s having a lovely positive impact on so many people. We’ve got to keep the positivity trend going all year. It’s hard in the winter when it’s so dark and dreary. Never give up and never doubt! We all need to keep flying or at least learn how to! 🙂

I teeter between blind optimism and befuddled disillusionment. Even though sometimes I tell myself the worse that could happen is failure or a terrible fall, I do not always handle it well. Even though I wish that life sometimes had more ups than downs, I think that the low and uncertain points help us appreciate the good and positive times and sometimes even prepare us for them.

Yes, having a good balance wouldn’t be bad, just as long as the negativity isn’t immobilizing by getting in the way of moving forward. Thanks for the feedback 🙂
